He stared into his phone seeking excitement but felt only the empty pangs of blue light. He chewed over a shower-workshopped joke hoping to elicit the mirth that followed the buzzes and chirps of a pithy update. His words went unacknowledged. For a minute. Then three minutes. He edited for a punchier post at eight minutes. Incessantly refreshed the feed for the next five. Then deleted the joke at fifteen, leaving only the glow of online activity to announce his loneliness.
